To create this mouthwatering Southern Style Dirty Rice, you’ll need:
Packed with richness and brimming with flavor, Louisiana Dirty Rice is one of those versatile side dishes that might just steal the spotlight.
This authentic Southern recipe features sausage, ground beef, bell pepper, onion, celery, and a blend of spices. It’s savory, comforting, and perfect for any occasion—whether it’s a casual weeknight or a festive holiday feast.
In the South, we make our food work for us, and the dishes that do the most often become the most beloved.
Dirty Rice is one of those hearty comfort foods that’s bursting with flavor and can be served just about anywhere. Whether it’s a quick weeknight meal, a potluck, a family gathering, or a holiday spread, it fits right in.
INGREDIENTS:
1 lb. ground meat
3 cups uncooked long-grain white rice (I used Uncle Ben’s)
4 tbsp. Creole Seasoning (I used Zatarain’s)
1 1/2 tbsp. Zatarain’s Dehydrated Sweet Bell Peppers
1 tbsp. minced Onion (I used McCormick’s)
1 tbsp. minced garlic
1 tbsp. soy sauce
6 1/2 cups water
2 tbsp. butter
Dash of paprika for taste
DIRECTIONS:
Step 1: Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it into small pieces. Drain and set aside.
Step 2: In a large saucepan, bring the water to a boil. Add all the seasonings and butter, stirring until well combined. Then, add the meat and rice; return to a boil.
Step 3: Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 25 minutes, or until the rice is tender. Remove from heat and let stand for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork before serving. Sprinkle with paprika and enjoy!
Cooking Note: I aimed to replicate the results of a box of Zatarain’s Dirty Rice while keeping costs down, as this is a favorite meal in our household. The outcome was very close! You could opt for fresh peppers and onions, but for my quick version, I stuck with the dried ingredients.
This recipe yields 8-12 servings (about 1 cup each). We love leftovers in our house, so enjoy!
